General Manager Needed for Construction and Industrial Company

[POSITION FILLED] November 23, 2021 – Schaffer Associates is recruiting for a General Manager for a well-regarded, privately held international corporation within the construction industry. Based in the Southeast, the General Manager is responsible for the sales direction of the company, the profitable management of branch operations, and, along with the CEO/President, is accountable for the P&L. Areas of responsibility will include growing the business profitably in the targeted commercial sectors that include MRO, Safety, Hardware, and Shipping and Handling, and cooperatively in those business development functions in support of major project opportunities. This position reports to the CEO/President.

 

Primary Job Responsibilities: 

  • Oversight of daily operations at company branches in concert with the area managers reporting directly to this position.
  • Responsible with the area managers for developing and implementing those sales strategies relevant to market opportunities for each branch and in total for the company.
  • Accountable for developing and maintaining branch budgets and for defining strategies by branch to meet and exceed the defined financial goals.
  • Ensure the overall high quality and timely delivery of the company’s product and service offerings to customers.
  • Directly interface with key accounts and major project opportunities to capitalize on the potential for the company.

 

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Develop company training modules with Human Resources, the Director of Marketing, and the CEO/President.
  • Develop and implement sales coaching and training to train branch managers on selling tactics, branch operations, and P&L management
  • Develop and manage sales training to develop branch sales representatives on customer service and sales techniques
  • Maintain knowledge of top-level key account trends as well as top-level branch accounts: 3 month trends, annual trends, top level contacts within account
  • Work in conjunction with area managers on sales and KPI reviews of branch managers and sales representatives
  • Ensure that daily, weekly, monthly, and quarterly sales reviews are conducted at assigned branches and that follow-up actions are taken.
  • Work in conjunction with area managers on hiring, promotion, discipline, and termination of branch employees.
  • In concert with Human Resources, define and implement branch level compensation plans
  • Work promptly to resolve any employee disputes or concerns and document all action; maintain files on all branches and actions taken in accordance with the company’s personal conduct and performance policy.
  • Ensure that area managers properly carry out any personal conduct or work performance improvement meetings, properly documenting the event, all parti- cipating employees, and corrective action taken.

 

Minimum Requirements: 

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience
  • 10 – 15 years’ experience in the commercial construction field; prefer product knowledge in MRO, Hardware, and/or Safety markets
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Team player, self-driven, takes initiative, is enthusiastic
