Building Supply Company Seeks General Manager

[POSITION FILLED] February 6, 2022 – Schaffer Associates is recruiting for a General Manager for a regional building supply company. Reporting to the Vice President of Operations, the General Manager will be tasked with effectively managing and leading a Company branch. This responsibility includes accountability for the branch team members, sales and gross profit, purchasing and inventory control, operations, customer service and relationships, business planning and development, and financial performance. Collaboration with the Company leadership team is encouraged and required in many areas to be most effective.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES 

Team Members

  • In coordination with HR, recruit and hire individuals to support company objectives.
  • Manage, develop, and lead employees to help them achieve professional and company goals.
  • Promote positive team morale through timely recognition and feedback.
  • Ensure team members follow all company policies and procedures.
  • Appraise performance and develop plans to address underperformers.
  • Promote a synergistic relationship among the team.

 

Sales and Gross Profit

  • Work with management to develop and implement a market sales strategy.
  • Optimally service the local market while expanding the customer base and service area.
  • Work to achieve established gross profit objectives for the different customer segments and product categories.

 

Purchasing and Inventory Control

  • Coordinate with the Purchasing & Inventory Control Department to maintain optimal levels of commodity and building products inventory.
  • Ensure timely completion of inventory cycle counts and adjustments.
  • Oversee the storage, security, and rotation of inventory to minimize shrinkage.
  • Maintain an appropriate level of in-stock store merchandise.
  • Ensure branch compliance with receiving and transfer policies.
  • Maintain positive relationships with vendors.
  • Ensure that Accounts Payable inquiries are promptly addressed.

 

Operations

  • Make safety the top priority among all team members. Hold regular safety meetings.
  • Ensure that customers and suppliers are operating safely on site. Encourage employees to monitor for any potential safety issues.
  • Maintain the appearance and condition of the showroom, yard, warehouses, inventory, trucks, and
  • Conduct formal monthly yard evaluations to identify improvement opportunities/potential efficiency gains.
  • Coordinate with the Fleet & Equipment Manager or outside service providers to schedule fleet and equipment services and repairs.
  • Comply with all OSHA and DOT requirements.
  • Ensure the delivery team optimizes journeys to minimize costs while adhering to the delivery policy.
  • Support the implementation of OTIF and delivery truck turn-around tracking.

 

Customer Service and Relationships

  • Ensure team members are professional in their interactions with customers.
  • Work with customers to address and effectively resolve complaints.
  • Professionally inquire about past due balances with customers as necessary to assist Accounts Receivable.
  • Maintain relationships with key customers.
  • Seek beneficial community and industry involvement.

 

Business Planning and Development

  • Ensure company goals, progress and milestones are communicated and shared with team members.
  • Assist in developing an annual sales forecast and operating budget to support the business plan.
  • Provide input to the Leadership Team to help the group make more informed decisions about effectively leading and growing the company.

 

Financial Performance

  • Optimize financial performance for the branch.
  • Review P&L monthly with management to identify areas for improvement and progress towards goals.

 

OTHER KEY FACTORS

  • Develop proficiency with our ERP system, BisTrack, and other operating software.
  • Strong computer skills – Word, Excel, Outlook, ERP Systems
  • Always maintain personal integrity.
  • Provide appropriate and timely feedback to other managers.
  • Practice personal development, organization, and time management
  • Timely complete special projects.
  • Adhere to all company policies and procedures.
